Julia Marinelli

“creates art pieces to entertain people and make their day when people see it”

Julia Marinelli, working under the name JUM, graduated from the SCAD
Hong Kong in 2020, where she got her BFA in Illustration.

Born in Brazil and now based in Hong Kong, Julia started drawing at a very
young age, and when she finally realized that her art didn’t have to be something just for herself, but even more for others, was when she finally understood how powerful and free it can be. Her art is never attached to only one subject matter. It is always about making it visual the things that we can’t see, be that a fantasy, a dream or even a feeling. While being interested in different medias, the surreal and dreamy aspects are always present.

For her, the fluidity and flexibility in art are the most important ingredients to keep producing work that is relevant and truthful not only to herself but also to the world.

The Nature Within series

The intention behind the creation of the series “The Nature Within” was to remind people that we are not alone in the world, that we as human beings coexist with all creatures and each other. Since moving to Hong Kong, I feel that I am constantly disconnecting myself from nature, especially after growing up surrounded by trees, flowers and beaches. With that in mind, I decided to illustrate a surreal connection between Human and nature, combining and mixing a human figure with different elements. These elements are: Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Human, and Consciousness. The piece “Jardim da Vida”, in English “The Garden of Life”, was the first one I made and the main inspiration for the series. We need to learn how to cherish and protect nature and stop taking it for granted.
